Court Nets A Fishy Thief

Illawarra Mercury

Tuesday April 13, 1999

A South Coast man who stole more than $6000 worth of fishing gear caught more than he bargained for in Batemans Bay Local Court yesterday.

David John Calder, 19, of Hillcrest Ave, Narooma, was warned he had come close to hooking a jail term after being found guilty of larceny.

``You were caught red-handed this time," Magistrate Paul Lyon told Calder.

``The padlocks and bars shouldn't have to go up in the community, they should go up on people who prey on the community."

Calder was arrested in the Riverside Caravan Park at Narooma on December 29 last year after stealing six fishing rods and reels and other fishing equipment, worth $6400.

Mr Lyon sentenced him to perform 100 hours of community service for the offence and warned him to make a ``whole-hearted effort".

``If you turn-up late or you aren't diligent, you will be in breach of the order and you will be brought back here," he said.
