CLEAN LINES: Aboard the sailing ship Bankland in Newcastle Harbour on January 14, 1901.
NEW SETTLERS: The Edmonson's house at Toronto, top, and the house's parlour, below. The parlour was typical of that era. The pictures were taken on September 17, 1901.
ELEGANT: The Ridge residence at Merewether owned by businessman and community leader Edward Merewether. Later, the house became better known as Hillcrest.
NATIONHOOD: The Federation flag unveiling at New Lambton Public School on May 14, 1901.
DECORATIVE: Newcastle Harbours and Rivers employees with their showcase float for the Eight-Hour Day Parade on October 25, 1901.
SMOKO: Fettlers working on the Main Northern railway line at Adamstown on their break. The picture was taken on January 26, 1901.
DIDN'T THEY HAVE A LUVERLY TIME: The Phillips family picnic at Toronto on September 18 in the year of Federation. This was a traditional outing for Newcastle families of that time.
BUSY PORT: A row of steamers and sailers berthed at The Dyke wharf on May 5, 1901, to load mostly coal.
PICK AND SHOVEL: Building a stormwater drain was a labour-intensive exercise in 1901. The picture was taken at New Lambton on June 17.
LAKE RUN: The `Pygmy' steam locomotive at Toronto on September 28, 1901. The train was popular with picnickers from Newcastle.
URBAN TRANSPORT: The opening of the Mayfield steam tram service on January 11, 1901.
STATE OF THE ART: Castlemaine brewery workers at Newcastle West on July 17, 1901. The men are with a boiler just imported from Lancashire.
MINDS ENNOBLED: Members of the Mechanics Institute, New Lambton, forerunner of the School of Arts and libraries, on September 21 of that important year.
SOCIAL HUB: The Commercial Hotel, Lambton. The men who gathered for this picture outside the hotel on August 11 would mostly have been coalminers.
SUBSTANTIAL: Solicitor William Sparke's house in High St, Waratah. The picture was taken on February 2 in the year of Federation.
PRESTIGIOUS: Businessman C.H. Lewington's house at New Lambton on December 2, 1901.
COMMERCIAL WATERWAY: Dredging at Cockle Creek in March, 1901.
MERCHANDISE: E. Bell's store in Elder St, Lambton, on November 2.
HARBOUR WORKS: This picture of Walsh Island and the dredge Castor was taken on May 5, 1901. The dredge worked in Newcastle Harbour for many years.
MILESTONE: The laying of the foundation stone for the Hamilton Wesley Church on November 20. The church pictured was on the corner of Beaumont and Tudor streets.
